As May comes to a close, we just aren’t ready to let go of all the celebrations that occurred this month. We celebrated both National Egg Month and National BBQ Month. We also highlighted important days from Cinco de Mayo to Mother’s Day to graduations to parties and picnics to kick off summer and all the in-betweens. We want to have one more celebration with you by sharing some of the most delicious dishes our Cool Food Panelists have prepared.

Today is yet another awesome food holiday to celebrate—it’s National Shrimp Day! Did you know that Americans eat more shrimp than any other seafood? Of the 15.5 pounds of fish and shellfish eaten by the average American each year, shrimp accounts for 4 pounds, topping the entire list.
We’ve all heard of Cinco de Mayo (“the fifth of May”) as a fun celebration with lots of Mexican food, but what is the history behind the holiday event? A common misconception is that Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico’s independence, but it is actually centered around celebrating Mexico’s victory in the battle at Puebla, which occurred during the Franco-Mexican War on May 5, 1862. It was unsure that Mexico could win the battle, since they were heavily outnumbered by French military forces. Ultimately the win became a significant source of pride for Mexico.
Did you know that May marks National BBQ Month? While there’s no denying our love for hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken and other grill favorites, we can’t ignore our obsession over side dishes fit for outdoor dining. And we know that we’re not alone! Between the array of pasta and potato salads, deviled eggs and veggie assortments, we simply just cannot get enough.
